Unless we compare our ‘theory brain’ to our ‘paying attention brain’ to notice: . •The times when someone understands what others might feel and think so well that they use it for their own unfair advantage. That requires ‘empathy’, right? And it hurts, causing intrigue and drama. . •Or, the times when someone truly believes they ‘empathise’ but it appears like they’re just feeling their own reactions. And honestly? They just seem more self-absorbed and unable to do much of use, rather than ‘empathetic’. They genuinely think they feel others experiences, right? They genuinely believe that they’re ‘caring’. But it complicates things and makes them unreliable. . •Or the times when someone, weirdly, is very honest about their own ‘selfish’ needs and feelings. But they still seem to ‘know’ exactly ‘the right thing’ to say and do that gives good outcomes for everyone. This *appears* ‘uncomplicated’ and ‘easy’ for them and everyone else. It’s often unnoticeable that they’re even doing something special in their minds and actions.... Ironically, it’s this complicated balance that seems to match our simple ideal of ‘empathy’, isn’t it?
